In the context of international and cross-disciplinary collaborations, on August 21st 2023 the Institute of Photonic Chips (IPC) hosted a conversation with Mr Ziwei Yang on liquid crystals and metasurfaces. In this talk, Mr Yang introduced LCs and discussed the recent work of his group on how LCs interact with static metasurfaces to tune the optical properties and discusses the possibility of further applications. Staff members and students of the Institute joined this academic exchange.

Mr Yang is a PhD student at the Australian National University and at the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS), working on tunable metasurfaces under the supervision of Prof. Dragomir Neshev. Driven by electrical and optical pumping tuning methods, his research ende**ours to uncover new possibilities that cannot be achieved in traditional optics in this new field.
